Yes, but Ariel doesn't mind. He acknowledges how lucky he is to have his gifts, and agrees with her that the Clan, and more importantly, those he cares about, would be better off if they were more widely available. As such, he is supportive of her heresy, even if he doesn't really give using them to support the Wake Angels a second thought. It was actually those arguments that facilitated the two knowing each other better, and helped them become good friends before they were ever married. Any arguments they have in the modern time period are mostly rehashes of old ones and more loving jabs than actual barbs.

They all met in the Shinjo Flight academy when they skipped orientation for various reasons and spent their first day in detention together. Ketaan, the casually bored rebel; Ariel, the awkward nerd; and Tai-Wen, who liked machines more than people. They pulled a regular Breakfast Club, and were utterly inseparable from that point forward.

As for what happened to Ketaan...

On a routine check of an asteroid field, after landing their craft, the pilot came upon a strange anomaly. What appeared to be the remains of a long-destroyed personal vessel, but of no type that any of the three were familiar with. Their databases provided no useful information, nor did the the kami reveal anything of use when the shugenja consulted with them. So, throwing caution to the wind, they set about exploring the crash the old fashioned way. The engineer began examining the craft, in the hopes of making heads or tails of the tech involved. The shugenja continued his consultations, but with similar results. The pilot, going by what he knew, found what appeared to be the cockpit. Though the controls were designed for an entirely alien anatomy, his eyes were drawn to the panel beside the strange seat, which bore a glowing object of irregular, shifting shape. Beneath the partially clear surface, traces of what appeared to be circuitry danced. Fascinated, he reached out for it. As his hand neared it, the object reached back.

Over the coms, the shugenja and engineer heard a shout of shock, then fuzz. They rushed to the pilot's location to see the object retreating to its panel, reduced in mass. There was no sign of the pilot.

The pilot drifted in a blank white space. Spheres drifted by, containing the dreams and nightmares of entire worlds. They were distant, so distant, but he could make out pictures dancing on the surfaces. Here in the void between however, there was no noise. No sound at all. They would later learn that he had been transported to a subsection of the Realm of Dreams, though the knowledge would not change the horror he felt at being cast adrift in the silence. For out in the asteroids, there was no sphere, for there was nothing to dream.

Back in the physical plane, the shugenja and the engineer worked frantically to try to understand what happened. The kami of the strange device spoke to the shugenja, but theirs was an alien language of spinning lines and dots that he could not understand. He described it for the engineer, and she traced it out in the dust of the rock. Urging him to keep talking, she eventually realized she was drawing an immense circuit diagram. She loosed technician's probes from her kit into the device, and attempted to stimulate it with electricity. The results were varied, but the shugenja could see the kami responding to the pulses and probes by twisting at reality itself. When they understood enough, they risked all by interacting directly with the fluid device.

Using the shuigenja's magic and the engineer's understanding, they were able to ground themselves on Ningen-do while opening a portal to Yume-do. It took many tries, but they fished their comrade from the silent void, and pulled him shivering back to them. Their success was not without cost, however, as the device had lost its mass on the panel completely. Now each of the three bore a gauntlet upon their right hands, a closer than skin-tight sleeve of shimmering gray that seemed to flow with the circuits beneath, where their veins should be. The material had eaten right through their encounter suits to bond with their skin, now as much a part of them as any other limb. Thus began their rise.
