Tai-Wen looks to Enshiro, and nods. "Well, there we go. If there are any ships that can blast the stuff and get out of the way, it'll be my works of art. Once we finish up the scanner, I can send the other Angels to go test the theory."
She turns to look over the process currently underway, and silently observes. If she can help, she'll jump in, but best not to have too many hands on such a small object.

Kokishin complies, using his steady trained hands to keep the screw in place. (Ooc: I am camping and have really terrible service. If I need to roll something please do it for me. Thanks. I'll be able to check properly tomorrow.

The booby trap is disabled with ease and as the other screws come up it becomes clear they are all connected to the same trap. One by one, they are disabled and thus reveals the satellite within.

Naosuko sets the upper casing aside, doing her best not to pull any wires free from the antenna on the top. Now it's time to see who is interfering with the empire. Was her theory correct, or is there another group at work that she had not dealt with before. What is that? Engineering(Gaijin)/Int 9k3: 9d10o10k3 35

Naosuko sees stuff...and it probably worries her.
Lets hope she is willing to share her concerns.

"Power supply is a <Ferret>-class Sassathif reactor." The Sassathif word is strange, but it fits naturally into her narration somehow. "There are some components that will require more study to identify, but are certainly of gaijin origin."
She studies the rest of the components for a little while, then does her best not to curse for the record. "Other components are of Rokugani-make. Adapters between the gaijin components are custom and will require further study to identify origin if possible. Wiring and capacitors are general make, adapted to store the energy created by the reactor."
"Most important pieces identified so far are the Universal Particle Entwiner and the Communications Relay Hijacker. Items designed to intercept and rewire communications of any type. Rokugani design."
She pauses the recording and turns to her companions, "We may be able to hack into those components and find out more about who set this up. The energy source is rather common for this class of device. This combination however, speaks to something much worse."

The hacking goes off with far to much ease for Kokishin's taste, although it quickly becomes clear why this is the case. As soon as he is inside the Satellite's coding, it instantly begins to delete its own software in an attempt to prevent the hacker gaining useful information.
Still, the programing language used by each Great Clans (and that of the Minor Clan alliance) is different, and that fundamental code can't be deleted quickly in any case. Recognizing the language is a different matter, and its very clear that this code has some level of cyphering over the top. It was however of Rokugani origin, unless this alien race for some reason chose to use Katakana symbols to code in, and made it compatible with Rokugani computers.
Of course, as had been seen with the recent tensions between the Scorpion and Phoenix, such source code or programing language does not always indicate who is at fault.

As the Asako works, Naosuko makes a few more mental notes and prods a bit at a few of the components. When he notes his success, she turns her attention back to the screen of the workstation as it begins the process of destroying itself. Knowing she has little time, she studies what is there and attempts to pull anything useful out by observation alone. Remembering code. Investigation (Notice)/Perception 8k3. "Still, it being Rokugani continues the thread that the threat is internal to the empire."

Kokishin also tries to garner what he can from the code before it deletes itself. Any sort of specifics regarding a person, family, clan, or organization that wrote the code is what he is after. Investigation/Perception 21 orokos.com/roll/531135Kokishin also alerts the Unicorn and Spider members of the party of the development. "The device is gaijin, but has been modified by a Rokugani. Whoever made the modifications was very security-conscious, because there was a trap concealed inside that Kasuga-san here managed to circumvent, and the code is self-deleting, meaning that as I speak, it's disappearing. Fortunately, the modifications include non-gaijin parts, and those can't be deleted so easily. Would you mind taking a look at the parts and see if you can determine their origin? I will look as well." Kokishin peers at the small Rokugani parts, searching for serial numbers or other identifying features. "Sure." Tai-Wen pushes off of the wall, approaching the device while making sure to keep the tube o' doom from being directly at her back. She hunkers down, flicking a few settings on the microfabber that flickers onto her left arm as she does so. She holds up her hand as a luminescent glow begins projecting from her palm, and begins sweeping her eyes over the inner workings. If they are Gaijin or Rokugani, perhaps she can recognize the make by the style of manufacture used. There is a distinct signature to engineering that most would not think of, but years of experience at the Shipyards has made it the first thing Tai-Wen looks for. The Spider nods at Kokushin's words and approaches the device as the Unicorn does.
Enshiro glances over the object as Tai-Wen shines a glow over it, scanning for any sort of text or identifying markers that might be familiar to him. Perhaps he would find something written in code, something he could decipher, even if it was only a single mark or character. Inwardly, he hoped that he did not recognize anything of Chuda origin.
There was also the noticeable absence of kami from the object earlier. It did not sit well with him, though he continues looking over the strange device.

The Naosuko and Kokishin both notice the cypher of this code was well suited for its purpose. Few words repeated themselves, and those that did made little sense, although perhaps they were key parts of the code. It hardly mattered however, for such repeating words used standard Kanji instead of Katakana, meaning RUN, IF, PRINT and other key parts of programing languages could not be used to decipher the rest of the code. Naosuko also noticed the same was surprisingly true for the punctuation. It was hard to get a good look as it erased itself, but based on what she was looking at, the symbols that had been developed for coding, to make it clear to the computer and the kami what you wanted it to do, were...spun around. In at least one example it looked like the Kanji 茶 had replaced a pair of brackets.
At its heart, this Cypher had been BUILT from the ground up for coding. This was not adapted to code, this was made to code.
Tai-Wen's examination brings something else to light. The custom made converters, on closer examination, looked far rougher around the edges then it should. Blacksmiths and Engineers often considered themselves artisans, and this was sloppy work, far to sloppy, even for a Heimin. Instead of being polished it almost looked like someone had gone over it with some sort of cutter, attempting to scratch and score the surface. Any artistic merit of these small components had been deliberately destroyed.
However it had been done fast, with clear impatience, and here and their were a few lines that didn't follow the scoring... it looked like these devices may have been engraved. A makers mark perhaps? Or maybe some other additional information?
It was on the third converter that was different. This one was smaller, harder to spot, allowing the Rokugani tech to interface with the Sassathif power supply for one specific component... it looked like it was part of the booby trap perhaps? Regardless, due to where and how it was installed, it was clear it couldn't be easily modified without making it impossible to fit. The component showed some quite fine metal work, but the most important thing was the metal was poor quality. The maker was used to using cheap metal and achieving great things with it, showing great skill, if clearly not that of a Samurai trained Engineer.
Of course that narrowed the list substantially. Where would you find a place where their is too much engineering demand for the Samurai to keep up, but not enough official demand to allow the bulk buying of good quality metal, especially since that implied the demand wasn't necessarily Samurai in origin. Where a Hiemin could make his living making devices like this, and get this good at it, but not be bothered by the legal ramifications....well not most of the time.
As Enshiro looked at the device something felt off...their was something about this situation. Not Spider familiar, he knew that much. Still, he couldn't help but think their was a reason the Kami seemed to be lacking in the casing. That much was certainly clear, it wasn't the device as a whole that did this, it was the case.
(OOC: Enshiro sadly needs to roll something to get more then that.))

Kokishin thinks hard on the information gleaned so far. After a while of pondering, he makes a suggestion. "The World of Dreams is the only place I can think of that might be able to provide products of this nature of craftsmanship and of this questionable legality. It's a big planet, but at least it's a lead. Can anyone else think of another place that meets the criteria set by the information?"
