Enshiro sat patiently in the mess hall. Whichever of his crew members were present were seated a respectful distance away. Enshiro had ordered fine food prepared for him and his guests, and for servants to escort the other party members to the dining area.
For now, Enshiro waits, busying himself with spell research on his datapad.
((OoC: feel free to write in whatever food you want!))

It is convenient that Kokishin is already a guest on Enshiro's ship. He is looking forward to dinner - being a courtier, he thrives on social gatherings. With a few minutes to go until the designated time, he straightens out his best kimono and gives his face a quick wash. He knows he doesn't have to dress his best, but he wants to, because he knows that this mission is going to be a dirty affair, and this might be his only chance to be fully in his element. Chik'kan, however, could not be less pleased. For one, the pair is set to arrive right on time again, something that frustrates the early bird nezumi. For two, Chik'kan dislikes human gatherings, and for good reason. Stares, sneers, stepping on the poor nezumi's tail; these are the things that Chik'kan associates with human gatherings.
"Now, now, Chik'kan. You must calm yourself. There are only seven of us, plus perhaps a few more. I didn't see any of them staring or glaring at you at the bar. They seemed quite indifferent about your presence. Isn't that what you like?"
"Yes-yes" chitters the ratling. "But I don't like walking around the ship-ship. You would think no one here has seen a nezumi before."
"It's quite probably that most of them haven't. I will talk to our host about that if you like. You don't have to attend, but if you do, the crew will see that you are above them in place and at the very least will know not to talk down on you to your face."
"I have good ears, Kokishin-shin. I can hear-hear them even when they think I can't can't."
"When are you going to learn to stop listening, Chik'kan? You are a gifted surgeon and a rememberer, one of the most respected nezumi in the tribe. You can stitch a wound back together faster than a seamstress can stitch a torn hakama. If you have confidence in yourself, you will come to realize that those that talk down on you are ignorant morons who are low in station because they are ignorant morons."
Chik'kan relaxes a little. "Yes, you say that-that often, Shin-shin. Let's go or we'll be late-late."
"That's the spirit, my friend. Now while we're heading up to the mess hall try not to purposely trip anyone you've heard talking about you with your tail. Don't think I don't notice when you do that and then complain your tail gets stepped on."
The nezumi blushes, in the way that nezumi blush, only really detectable by those who have spent significant time with them. "Yes, Kokishin-shin..."
The pair enters the mess hall with two minutes to spare. Enshiro is already waiting for them, plugging away on his datapad by himself. Kokishin, in his glimmering red artificial silk, bows. "My gracious host. You've done more than enough to see to mine and my cohort's comfort. I thank you for the meal we are about to partake in." Chik'kan bows as well, though it appears somewhat awkward since nezumi bodies were not really made for bowing. "It is a pleasure being your guest-guest," Chik'kan says, trying to sound sincere. The nezumi stiffens back up and the pair waits to be told where to sit.

Having docked at one of the radial docking ports of the Obsidian Truth, Naosuko leaves the wide brimmed hat on the dashboard but brings the sunglasses along, carefully stowed in one of her sleeves. She is dressed in a more recognizable navy blue and gold kimono in an informal style. The gold embroidered mon of the Tortoise is emblazoned over her heart, and she wears sandals with rubber soles that muffle the sound of her footsteps on the metal floors of the cruiser. Her hair is composed simply into a maiden's foxtail, and only has a light dusting of makeup on her face. Just enough to accentuate her features a bit.
Having resisted the desire to bring along any work-related objects beyond her holocom, Kasuga Naosuko arrives at the Mess escorted by one of the servants. She bows in greeting to those in attendance. "Good Evening, Samurai-samas.." Noting the ratling, she continues, "..and assistant-san." Her bow to the ratling isn't as deep, but still polite.
She takes a seat at the foot of the table, where a minorclans-woman would sit when among her superiors.

(OOC: I'm not super clear on the ratling's place in this universe. I can't tell if they're supposed to be treated as samurai, not as well as samurai but better than peasants, like peasants, or like the dirt on the ground. What little I've gathered from Mack'thir is that a ratling 'servant' isn't a servant at all, but more of a colleague, so I at think they're at least above peasants, but beyond that I'm still trying to get a feel for them)

Post by The Wake Angels on Jun 16, 2017 8:02:07 GMT 10
The Angels trickle in a little late, Tai-Wen having checked, re-checked, and re-re-checked the docking clamps to make sure that the ships were going nowhere. Despite being invited to dine with the Captain of the ship, they don't seem to have changed out of their jumpsuits. Then again, considering how far-ranging Unicorn ships are combined with the utter lack of storage space in your average fighter, it is entirely possible that they do not own, or at least have access to suitable dinner attire.
Following several steps behind the servant leading them through the halls of the ship, Tai-Wen gazes about, her sharp eyes taking in every small facet of the ship. "We've seen this tub before."
"Surely not," Ketaan yawns, stretching the kinks of space travel out of his limbs. "I think I'd remember dining aboard a Spider vessel."
"Don't be deliberately dense," Tai-Wen shoots back. "I mean that we've SEEN this ship before."
"If you say so. One ship is much like another when the cannons are out."
Ariel is quiet, lost in though as he and his fellow Angels walk the halls. How many of the Daigotsu's companions have the Angels seen off? How many Unicorns have fallen to this ship's guns? And how does one sit across the table from a person who any other day would be an enemy and share a meal?

At the entrance of his first guest, Enshiro puts the datapad away.
He bows appropriately to each guest as they enter.
The Spider accepts the ratling's attempt at human manners with a stone face.
An unusual creature, though Kokishin certainly leaves it around for some purpose. It would probably be rude to address it as his slave, no matter the truth of that title.
"Please, sit wherever you wish." Enshiro invites to everyone, an open hand to the table. He gives a look to some attendants standing nearby. On cue, they come to the sides of the seated guests, asking for orders. Enshiro himself requests some yakisoba.
"A guilty pleasure, noodles. Especially those done in the style of the Crab." He figured to start the conversation with something agreeable: food.

Nezumi aren't human, so they're treated as filthy gaijin by most, and the Brotherhood hasn't accepted the numerous Asako treatises on the possibility of Nezumi having a soul. The whole servant/colleague status thing is a complicated relationship between the Phoenix and the only known space-faring Tribe of Nezumi, the Burnt Crane, who actually consider themselves synonymous with the Phoenix Clan. Kokishin would know some but not all of the details of the arrangement between the Phoenix and Burnt Crane, which I've already explained via PM. There's a great deal more to it, but as you're not of high enough "clearance", seeing as only the Council, Clan Champion and Asako daimyo ARE (not even the Throne nor Chosen have been briefed, likely because historically none of them have cared enough to ask), so what you know is all your Nezumi employee/colleague would have informed you of. Please PM Emerald (and myself included if you wanna) if you or anyone has further queries~)

"I will have whatever Daigotsu-sama is having. I trust him to know what his own cooks make well. And a plate of vegetables" Kokishin adds, subtly nodding toward Chik'kan. "So, does anyone else here like literature? I just can't put down anything written by Asahina Meiko (Ooc I made that name up). She writes entertaining fiction about a man trapped in yume-do and trying to find his way out of a world he can shape, but not escape. A new book comes out tomorrow, but I will have to wait until our business is over before I will be able to get a copy."

Naosuko orders whatever the crew was having. The steward assures her that she can have whatever she wants, but she is eventually brought a tray with millet, some questionable looking fish and a few vegetables.
"So, do you prefer the physical books over using a Datapad Asako Kokishin-sama?" Naosuko asks, "Real paper... *yawn* makes me sleepy."

The Wake Angels finally make their way in, nodding to the servant as they leave. At Ariel's prompting, they all remember their bows, and make their way to the nearest set of three adjacent seats.
"So, Daigotsu-san," Tai-Wen starts, pointedly ignoring the elbow to the ribs from Ketaan and her husband clearing his throat. "What battles has your ship seen?"
Ketaan's facepalm can be heard from several shugenja-powered jumps away.

"This might be my 'grew up in a library' talking, but there is a certain smell that physical books have that put me in the mood to read. Data pads are for work, though I probably do read a good deal more books on my data pad than I realize. What do you do for fun, Kasuga-san?"

"Sightseeing mostly, my duties allow for that to a point. From Golden Sun Bay on Rokugan to the Elemental moons of Isawa's Grace, I've seen a lot of the empire. But it's still impossible to see everything." She takes a bite of the millet, a bit overcooked but passable. "I'd like to see the Golden Mirror of the Crane, but it's unlikely one such as myself would be allowed the honor."
"Were I to visit where your duties place you, what would you recommend I see while I'm there Asako Kokishin-sama?"

"I don't believe I've heard of this Asahina Meiko. Interesting that this fiction writes of the Realm of Dreams. Most of my reading is about the spirit realms or theology. Though I certainly enjoy paper, if it is available."
Enshiro turns to reply to Tai-Wen. "It has seen many battles. Both against various xenos and some of the other clans. I can say from experience that the Obsidian Truth certainly performs admirably. And though your reputation proceeds you, I must ask: what battles has the Wake of Angels seen?" His reply is polite enough, though perhaps a bit vague, not going into the specifics of whom the Obsidian Truth has faced.

"I am a wanderer, going where my clan wills me to go conducting medical research on behalf of my clan. My duties take me everywhere. I spend less time than you might expect in courts, though I occasionally find myself in other clans' hospitality. I am fairly sure you would find the places I go boring and outside the realms in which you perform your business on behalf of your own clan."

"Surely you have seen something worth note, Asako Kokishin-sama." The Tortoise says, "It need not be something great and grand. A teahouse that you favor or an inn with a peculiar speciality."
"Here, I can go first. If you ever find yourself in the largest city of Pokau II, there is a purveyor of seafood that you simply must experience for yourself." She pulls up an address on her Holocoms and shows it to the Phoenix samurai. "The flavor is quite unique."
