Space stations are messy...
Some are only the size of a Cruiser/Carrier, where as they can be much bigger, up to and including the Shinjo Shipyards, which has an 80,000 km circumference. Assuming Herds rest is roughly the size of Earth.
Kyuden Hida is at the top end of the scale.....ignoring the insane shipyards of some of the Clans. Its not just a fortress, its the capital of the Crab Clans in the Stars, and the Crab's main staging point. Thus, while the Hiruma Prime has more people from other Clans, Kyuden Hida Prime Space Station has a population easily over 1 million people, and the size to match it.
What is common is that as they don't move the space station as much, they tend to have more powerful shields then standard as they can focus the power there. And they need to as they can't exactly dodge. Kyuden Hida in theory can move, but hasn't moved since Omen was built, as it was designed to be far more mobile.
But we aren't reaching Deathstar levels.... I want to make that clear. Ignoring once again, Shinjo Shipyards, nothing in space is bigger then 10km. Its just to hard to make something that big at this stage, let alone protect it in times of war.

Are we talking like Star Trek station size levels?

*Googles* Actually surprisingly accurate. The biggest structure in the Star Trek Universe is Voth Cith ship...which is about the size of the largest space structures in Empire of Emerald Stars. The bigger ones would be more common in Empire of Emerald Stars would be more common, but its accurate.
As for why Satellites get that big...several of these are the place that Clan would host Imperial Winter Court. The Dragon and Crab most famously have few worlds that is safe or in the case of the Dragon, Legal, to set foot upon, and a Satellite big enough to take the roll of a Imperial Court Host has to hold a LOT of people, and have a lot of space for various events and private meetings. In addition, other families, most commonly among the Unicorn, don't see a need to a planetary base of operation.
Simply put, in Star Trek, few people aim to spend their entire lives on a Satellite, and rarely are they built for Form over Function. The reverse is true in Rokugan.

The second post has been edited to contain the various battle statagies employed by the Clans in space... a fun bit of fluff I didn't want buried in OOC chat.
Thanks for Shinwa for formally writing out most of it after the lovely discussion you all had about the subject. My only edits are in blue, otherwise its all your work as a group.

Ship rules edited. It was pointed out to me that Air was way too strong (Stealth, TN to be hit, Shield value, Shield regen rate) and Water and Fire were too weak.
So shield regen has been moved to Water (where it really should have always been, see every healing spell in the game) and Fire has a new use... Overcharge.
2 new pieces of equipment have also been added that interact with Overcharge
Finally, Speeder rules have been added. Essentially they are a smaller, worse fighter that can't go into space and must go slower (although 'slower' is still VERY fast) and lack the equipment other ships have.

Huh, Shields were moved from Fire to Air at some point. Didn't notice when that happened, oh well. Time to adjust some stats.

I'm sorry if it's posted elsewhere: but some specific questions regarding space ship travel: 1) Travel Time: How long does it take to get from, oh, say, Oyo's system to the frontier? 2) How much time would that be in 'spell transit' vs. Normal flight? It makes sense not to necessarily pop out in the middle of the action and be caught unawares (unless your sun is flaring) but space is big and popping out right next to your planet is hard. Sublight is slow, but leaves open the question of 'how slow compared to where you come out of Walking the Way. 3) What is it like to be in a spaceship currently walking the way? Mostly making sure there's enough time to eat and sleep in transit.

I answers some of this elsewhere, but I don't think it was public. I think I was talking to our Tortoise.
1) Warning: I totally nerded out for this answer.
The Empire is roughly elliptical ovoid. With only 1 known exception (White Stag's Renewal) the Empire goes above and below the middle of galactic plane 1 hour in both directions, reaching the top and bottom of said plain, with the Crab holding the small cluster of stars that make up the 'bottom' of the Empire, and a collection of clans holding the stars that make up the official top of the Empire.
The true top of the Empire, White Stag's Renewal, is actually 2 further hours above the Galactic Plain and into the Halo Stars. However only the Tortoise and the Imperial Families know of its existence, (and thus likely the Scorpion as well) so it hardly counts.
Its longest direction core to rim or spinwise to trailing is 8 hours. As this makes a fairly flat Ovid you will NEVER travel more then 8 hours and remain inside the Empire.
Amusingly enough, you can actually use this information to work out the size of the Empire. The galactic plane is 2 kilo light years thick, meaning that at its fastest Open the way moves you at 1000ly/ hour. This makes the Empire 8kly across. If use the volume of a Ovid, it gives a volume of 63 cubic kilo light years.
Assuming the galaxy is the Milky way, this means the Rokugani Empire currently occupies 0.02% of the Galaxy at a MAXIMUM and realistically quite a bit less then that, due to the Outer Halo Stars and Globular clusters being ignored for this maths.
In the case of your trip in particular, the Journey from Oyo to the world you wish to go is 3 hours.
2) Outside the Empire, safety is the main concern, and as such you normally only appear 5-10 minutes out from your destination. INSIDE the Empire however, Tradition comes into play. This is after all a warrior society, and having ships appear out of no where inside land you are meant to defend can raise the wrong sort of attention. Thus, depending on your urgency, the current state of war between your clan and the clan who claims the world you are visiting, and your own politeness, it is considered common courtesy to appear between 30 minutes- 1 hours flight from a system, to give the system time to notice you and prepare.
3) Walking the Way is not an increase in speed...and while portals are required for it, its not teleporting either. Instead the Kami (by they water kami or the realm of Void)are folding space-time, and only through their clarity, perception and vision can you arrive in the right place AND time. There is a story of a Tamori who pissed off the kami that had opened the way midflight, and found themselves arriving to their daughter's Gempukku 10 years late. Whether this is true or just the work of the Silkworm's Courtiers to maintain their power is subject to debate, but the bending of space that this spell does leads to interesting effects.
Light from stars seems to bend and twist or vanish all together, as you move at what appears to it as variable speeds, depending on how the kami have compressed space. Other features of space seeming drift slowly past before leaping away or stretching as you pass through the top of a fold, or half of a planet twisting oddly or even vanishing as that part is folded away, out of view. Entering or leaving the Way requires a Portal, leading some Shugenja to suggest this is some sort of separate spirit realm that is layered just on top of Ningen-do, one closely linked to the Water kami as distance, time, and 'terrain' are subject to the change of Water. However that very fact makes studying it difficult. Every flight is unique, and every ship's water kami bends space slightly differently.

OK. That is less time than I thought.
On our first trip out, I think we must be taking the sllooooooooooooowwww road, but our Crab needs a decent night's sleep and a good meal or two at least. Unconsciousness does not regain void points and she's had a long day. And teamwork is important. I think, in my mind, we were aiming to reach the planet ready to begin exploration first thing in the morning of Day 2, but I"m not sure what everyone else was thinking.
Thanks for the clarification.

THats what I thought too. And I see no reason why we couldn't have left late and just got there the next day.
We needed to prep, eat and dock with the Lions ship anyhow.

Yeah, I spoke with emerald last night to confirm—Itsuki has the course plotted so we arrive at around 7am day 2, so most of the trip is not through Walking the Way. That gives us all a proper night's sleep :3

If I wanted to scan for things, do I use my perception or the ships water ring?

Lets go with a ships Water ring. I will edit the rules to reflect this.
Edit: Specifically make it Computing/the ships Water ring.
This reflects the Ships ability to scan and your ability to understand what the ship is showing you.

In the rules, it mentions the Ship's air ring provides a piloting bonus...?
