Naosuko takes some time while Kokishin ponders, deactivating the Sassithif power source, or at the very least detaching it from the rest of the components. Power down the satellite. Engineering(Gaijin)/Int, Void, Raise, 10k4: 10d10o10k4 26 ((OOC: Horrible, just horrible. Not Lucking this though.)) "We'll want to bring a sample with us, to compare artisan-ship." She replies after Kokishin makes his suggestion. "Taking the entire thing would be a bad idea, but the converter itself should be enough." Edit: ((OOC: Still wearing protective gloves and eye protection))

The Sassithif power source is designed by and for a creature with 4 hands to work on and it shows. In addition its not so much designed to turn off as it is to be disassembled, with all methods of halting it otherwise designed to automatically reengage after a certain time period. While Naosuko does manage to get it to power down eventually, there is a shower of sparks as she tries desperately to deal with the return of oxygenated air to the power source in the final moments of disabling it.
Once powered down she is left with 3 components. They are all safe from her knowledge, although the fuel source probably shouldn't be the shape it currently is. Putting it back together and have it work will likely take quite a bit more time then pulling it apart.
The Gyushi, having seen the sparks flying, walks back over to investigate and after making sure his workshop isn't about the catch fire, turns to Enshiro, "I have looked over the sensor data and what they are designed to calibrate to, and have written out some instructions that should allow it to track the Obsidanite. Although," He chewed the leaf for a second, "The sensor array isn't really designed for this so I must warn you that it could cause some system errors or minor damage. Nothing to serious from what I can tell, but I am an engineer, not a programmer, Daigotsu-sama."

"Clever, very clever," Tai-Wen mutters, lifting the component that merged the two technologies. "But, then, not quite clever enough. Partial maker's mark, low-quality materials but fine craftsmanship nonetheless. Heimen, Gaijin, or Alien, almost certainly. Equivalent skill to a Samurai artisan, but without the access to refined materials. Tell me your secrets, little one. Starting spectral analysis." Not thinking to warn the others, she spins a dial on the holo-display, tightening the focus of her beam until it is a sharp beam of light. She reaches down into her apron and draws forth a pair of goggles, slipping them on before applying the laser to lightly score the surface of the now-inert component. A beep indicates the arrival of a message on her datapad, so she shuts down the beam and takes up the readout. "As expected, Iron, Lead, both heavily oxidized. Too much carbon for quality steel. Pfeh, this whole electrical conduit could be downsized and lightened with the use of carbo-silicate polymer. Still, not too shabby considering what they had to work with... Huh. Traces of depleted Iridium." Lore: Material Sciences. What does your chemical makeup tell me? 33
"World of Dreams, sure. Could be the Burning Star. Wherever this was assembled, the pieces most likely flowed through Isawa's Shadow. Could be best to start there."

After Tai-Wen's analysis, Naosuko re-arranges the workspace a bit, bringing the Rokugani elements to the forefront and leaving the other components to the side. "Perhaps these can tell us a little more." She picks up the item that she had identified as the Unified Partical Entwiner, looks at all of the component's sides, running her fingers across it gently and takes a few pictures. That done, she sets it aside and moves on to the Communications Relay Hijacker and performs the same investigation. She talks narrates quietly as she does so, letting the others know what she finds as she goes. Pore over the components. Investigation/Perception, free raise if opposed. Raise.: 8d10o10k3 39"I know a few people at all of those ports of call." She says, her search complete. "It wouldn't be right to drag you to those kinds of places though, samurai-samas. You'd scare them off..."

Kokishin becomes annoyed at the Kasuga's pretense. "If Shibatsu-sama had intended for you to work by yourself, he wouldn't have asked us to form a team. I would ask that you remember your place, Kasuga-san, and not presume to know what is right for the mission. If there is something I cannot do, I will tell you, and recuse myself accordingly."

"More to the point, you assume that we're unknown in those ports." Tai-Wen doesn't look up from her datapad, but her tone of voice conveys less annoyance at the presumption, more distraction with the task at hand.
"'s been a few years, but there's still a few sorry souls who owe the Angels drinks over that affair above the Shadow. Saved a lot of lives. Moreover, Unicorn colors make you, well, less likely to be targeted by pirates flying into the space of the old Gaijin nations. Might not stop us from getting mugged, but smart pilots will think twice. And we'd be sorry pilots indeed if the stupid or desperate could give us trouble. Eugh, sulfur? This really is shit metal."

Enshiro stares at the object for a little while longer, perturbed, though he was unsure why. He resolves to bless his own mind with the same spell he placed upon his engineer, casting Fire Kami's Blessing upon himself. Right before he can begin wracking his brain for answers, he is approached by the Gyushi.
Enshiro manages to turn away from the device, still bothered by the absence of the kami around it. He attentively replies to his engineer, though he is still somewhat adjusting to the mind rush that this particular spell induces. "Excellent work, Gyushi-san. I will be sure to have a skilled programmer work on this. Though, Kokushin-san," He says as he turns towards the Phoenix. "You are skilled with computers, yes? Would you mind adjusting the scanners after we're finished in the workshop?"
The Daigotsu seems to pay no heed to whatever annoyance the others are discussing. They are professionals, they will get over whatever grievances they have. There is too much at stake for such minor details.
Enshiro turns back to the device, specifically it's case, examining it with great focus.

The components themselves seemed fairly standard fair as far as metals go. Cheap, of course, but for the most part, but for the most part they could come from anywhere in the Empire.
Well, not quite anywhere. The coreward third of the Empire, which contained Rokugan itself was older, and the metal contains more radioactive particles then standard in that part of the Empire. A few worlds were notable exceptions to this, due to various reasons, and the presence of radioactive atoms was in such low concentrations it was still completely safe...
But most likely it was mined in the middle or rimward sectors of the Empire. The heart of this region, really the heart of the Empire when it came to trade was the World of Dreams, but tracing the metals source further may not only be pointless, but also impossible. You could however rule out a few clans with this final analysis. The Crab occasionally sold cheap steel that was too poor a quality for their own use, but this was the sort of stuff they wouldn't consider trading. Better to break it down into its respective components and try again. The Mantis too would not trade it either, but for a different reason. Some of the impurities were Rare Earth metals, and depending on patience and greed, if they had a whole slab of this stuff lying around it may have been more profitable to extract the valuable metal and scrap the rest.
Maybe. It was borderline, dependant on if the price was in a boom or a bust. Still the Mantis would have not sold it to the lower casts to work with when they could have tried to make a few Zeni with some patience.
The Rokugani components looked well worn, probably having floated around, semi-legally, for multiple years, rather then fresh for this job. At least one of them was bent out of shape, clearly to fit into a previous device as opposed to the one it was currently used in.
Given her knowledge, its possible to guess what the device did, although she had to have some doubts. Based on the relay and the entangler, it was likely that this field was designed to intercept transmissions do...something to them, and rebroadcast them. Given that the signals they had sent to each other had always gotten through with only a little lag, it was hard to say what or even IF their messages had been tampered with, but it was clear this device was not designed to spy.
It just didn't have the range, it was far too dependent on the craft sending or receiving the signal to be used to send additional information to a third location.
Although it did have a critical flaw. It could not emulate an out of system craft or space station...had the Tortoise checked she would likely have found the Miya news signal she was picking up the other day would have appeared to have been broadcasting from either the Obsidian Truth or the Wake Angel's crafts rather then the official source.
((OOC: From what you can tell the program will do just fine))

Strong words from one who destroyed key evidence, unintentional though it probably was. Still, the underworlds of those three ports wouldn't blink at a 'filthy' Tortoise asking around for less than legal converters or unscrupulous rokugani tech. If she had a Phoenix with her, that would draw a lot more scrutiny, though Isawa's Shadow may be the easiest of the three.
"I believe there was a misunderstanding, samurai-samas. I did not mean to imply that I should do the investigation alone, nor that any of those destinations were not correct. Only that there are certain places on those planets where a merchant patron are likely to pass unnoticed. Where certain questions can be asked and answers garnered, but not in the ways of polite society." She bows to the Unicorn and Phoenix. "Those are the places where I would not force you to go."

"Mmmh." The grunt of noncommittal acknowledgement heralds Tai-Wen looking up from her datapad. "Well. Just enough wheat in the chaff to say that this stuff probably didn't come from Crab or Mantis space. The metal, that is. Won't tell us much more than that. So, seems to me we have a heading to get to. Follow the tracking program to a jump point, then guess which of our possible sites is the most likely from there. That, or trace backwards, start from the sale and try to figure out who we are dealing with so we're flying less blind."
She shuts down the readout and stows the 'pad in one of her apron's pockets, then reaches to her ear and flicks on her communicator. "C'mon loves, lazy asses out of bed. 's go time."
She lowers her hand and looks about the room. "So? What's it going to be?"

Kokishin is brought back to the relevant conversation by Tai-Wen's question. "Between Gyushi-san and I, we are confident that we can adjust this ship's scanners in short order to trace obsidanite, which presumably the station has left a trail of for us to follow. I believe that this would be a more direct means of finding our missing space station. If not, the World of Dreams seems like a reasonable place to gather information. We are already here, so why don't we try the trace first? We would waste less time if this is a dead end and we need to go to the World of Dreams than if the World of Dreams is a dead end and we have to come back here. What's more, Daigotsu Enshiro-sama may be able to commune with the kami to determine where the station jumped to, if it has jumped, and the earlier he does this, the better chance that they will be able to help us."

"It is as Kokishin-san says, tracking the trail of Obsidanite would be the most prudent option. Hopefully, it will even show us where a Way was Opened, and thus, make it significantly easier to commune with any lingering kami. Though, it is entirely possible they no longer linger here, what with the void of space everywhere." Enshiro turns to the Unicorn, "Though that brings me to mention the casing of that strange device. It appears to be more Void aligned than to Earth. Quite unusual. Is your crew's shugenja knowledgeable about such things? Though this leads me to believe that perhaps we seek an Ishiken; this is not a natural occurrence."

"Void? Well that's screwy," Tai-Wen says, looking back to the casing. "And nah, Ariel-kun's expertise is more the Realms and mayhem. Asako-san? My clan's had more than our fair share of Isiken, but yours are where most Voidheads are whelped."

"I'm sure you are not suggesting that the Phoenix clan stole a space station in an organized effort. Though, every clan has its traitors and outcasts, and if the culprit is some rogue seeking power for him or herself, then they will be treated as the criminals that they are with no backing from our fair and honorable clan. And while I hope no member or former member of the Phoenix had anything to do with the theft, we shall see where this investigation leads. Now let's be off, and hope the trail isn't too cold yet."
