'Morning' greeted the Samurai with the alarms briefly going off, the star flared once more. They were safe behind the Asteroid, however the ships did shake a bit from the sheer force of this outburst. This star's life was going to be short, it was quite clear. It was just too big.
In the engineering room, the lead Engineer, Gyushi Jūn waited for his superior. Despite his desire to see what has going on with the odd Satellite, he knew that if it broke during his investigation, even his skill would not protect him from the wrath of his superior. And so, he waited....impatiently. In the cell next to the object was a clearly pressurized cell. In the center of it was a glass vessel containing the Obsidanite, returned to its standard temperature and pressure. If you looked through the sealed door and into the container, it seemed the substance was currently in the process of condensing back into liquid, and running down the sides of the container.

The Gyushi's superior in the hierarchy of the Spider might not have arrived yet, but his superior in his craft is quickly approaching the engineering room. Having already checked that the ships were still attached to the docking ports, and that there appeared to be no indication of foul play, Koshuud Tai-Wen stalks the halls of the Obsidian Truth, following the 3-D map of the ships interior displayed on her microfabber. She is not in a particularly good mood, as without a current map of this particular ship, she has to use the blueprints of captured vessels of a similar class. The differences in this particular vessel have already lead her to two dead ends, a secondary mess hall, and a private shower with a very startled occupant. Though she tempers her annoyance with getting lost without a guide with the fact that the ship is clearly inferior to the vessels she has helped construct at the Shipyards, it still takes her some time and much of her patience to find her objective.
Swiping the guest ID on the door, she quickly glances about, taking in the room. Her eyes hover on both the pressurized cell and the engineer, but otherwise dismiss the room's contents. "Gyushi-san," she offers curtly, having noted the mon of his uniform. She strides over to the container, and gives it a long, hard look.
"So. This is Obsidianite."

(OOC: As point of fact, Enshiro and Kokishin never mentioned the obsidianite to the rest of the group, so you don't know anything about it atm, not even its name. On the other hand, you would have seen the Obsidian Truth scooping up some of the rocks, so your curiosity at the very least is not unfounded). The next to enter is Asako Kokishin, being stalked closely as always by Chik'kan, who has already had a fit about being close to the "mad-mad rock" and had to be calmed down. He notices Koshuud Tai-Wen examining the obsidianite. Kokishin is internally very unhappy about the presence of the obsidianite on board, though admitting it out loud would cause Chik'kan to go into a fit again, so he keeps it to himself. "Koshuud-sama," he says instead, "good morning to you. I hope that between among us we might be able to find a clue on that satellite as to where the space station has gone. I've never seen such a device before. Have you?" Kokishin begins examining the satellite's exterior, searching for some kind of input to plug a computer into. The morning came too early, but there was work to be done and duties to perform. Naosuko spends some time packing up her toolkit, the Ichicom Mk IV and her normal datapad, carefully ensuring that it is all secure and that she can find whatever she needs. The result however is a big jumble of tools and objects, giving the appearance that they were simply thrown into the bag willy-nilly. She wears similar clothing that she wore to dinner the night before, but avoids the makeup today as the contaminant might cause some issues.
She finds her way to the engineering compartment after a few carefully cultivated conversations with the crew. Slowly building up some trust with them may prove to be useful in the future. The Tortoise samurai makes her way into the room, noting the presence of a Gyushi and two of her known companions.
"Good morning all. Ah, I do not believe that we have met, Spider-sama." Naosuko approaches the engineer and bows, "I am Kasuga Naosuko, samurai of the Tortoise."

Enshiro walks in, hands together behind his back. "Good morning everyone. I trust you all had a pleasant rest?" he asks as he approaches his Gyushi engineer. "You must be eager to start." Enshiro produces a scroll, uttering a prayer to the fire kami.
(OoC: casting Fire Kami's Blessing to boost Gyushi's Int roll by 4k0)
"You may begin." he says with a permissive gesture towards the foreign device. Enshiro gives a look towards the Unicorn, nonverbally offering to send such a prayer her way as well.

"Wait wait, no no." Naosuko says, "First some ground rules for this device that I found should be in order. Necessary precautions to protect your ship from befalling the same fate as the station, if this device was involved at all."
"It was intercepting and repeating our com traffic, text and data included. Isolating it from your network would be important, no?" The Tortoise samurai looks throughout the compartment, noting the data terminals and other equipment. "We wouldn't want it to infiltrate your control systems and steer you into the path of a stellar wave or something, right?"

"Don't worry, Kasuga-San." Enshiro says assuradly and calmly. "I'm certain that my lead engineer of many years experience, the one with the esteemed position in charge of maintaining the ship's weaponry, would not fail to take the necessary precautions for this endeavor."
Enshiro turns to the Gyushi, and in a serious tone, questions, "Right, Gyushi-san?"

"Kasuga-san's got the right of it. This is a new substance to most of us," Tai-Wen says, shaking her head at both the Asako's mention and the offer of the prayer. "Doesn't matter what sort of precautions were taken, all we need is bad luck or a slip up to do something horrible. Ignorance kills."
She hunkers down, squatting to follow the path of the liquifying material in the tube.
"So. What are the inherent properties of this material? It appears to have properties similar to ferrofluid, but is the wrong consistency. What is its flash point? Any inherent toxicity? Radioactivity? Is it inert, or do we have to worry about it making compounds in the very air we breath? The slightest misinformation, or doing things the quick and easy way, could very well kill us all. Impossible to say with unknown substances and alien tech."

"Well, according to this ships computer, that substance you're looking at is obsidanite, and it will do worse than kill us. It'll drive us all completely mad, so I implore you, please don't open that tube. It would have been best if we left it where it was, but the Gyushi apparently have records of how to safely dispose of it so I assume Daigotsu-sama plans to notify the rest of the Gyushi about it once we are back in the empire. This little satellite is more relevant to our current cause", Kokishin says, still turning it over (waiting for gm).

Kokishin finds far more ports for Computers in this room then most others, although any attempt to connect to external signals seems to fail no matter what he tries. The room also seems to be completely isolated from wireless signals.
Gyushi Jun chewed for a moment longer as the Samurai debated between themselves before finally saying, "Sama's, I got to be honest with you, I been doing this a long time. Not long enough to have seen everything mind you, but long enough to know proper precaution." He turns first to the Kasuga, "This room is where the Gyushi on the ship put their Shugenja talents to work, combining magic and technology in traditions that only perhaps the Isawa and the Tamori predate. In addition, my family has ties to Meido and that too can cause a havoc. The Lab is independently powered and cut off from all extenral networking. However, should you still be concerned, I shall disable some of the more sensitive equipment herabouts, Kasuga-san, before touching the probe. Although from my brief look at the device, I can't imagine its that advanced, regardless of how it feels. The container is sealed with primitive screws. Not mag screws, not magic, nor sealant, or some kind of energy based locking system, not even some kind of unknown technology and certainly not designed for serious torque...just regular screws. Had to fabricate a tool just to open the daft thing.
Turning to the Unicorn he said, "Honestly don't know much about Obsidanite to be honest. Looked it up in more detail after it was clear it would be coming aboard, contacted some superiors about how to store it and such." He gestures to the small cell and the container suspended within, "The clear container is Transparisteel and is sealed in an Ampoule. The only way to open it is to break the container. The Ampoule is suspended in a magnetic field, which is all contained in a cell that is a total vacuum." He looks back at the room, and for a brief moment he looks a little nervous, "I would rather do more, but any further protections would render it impossible to see, and I suspect Daigotsu-sama would like to see the substance. As of course you can yourself, Koshuud-san."
He paused, as if trying to remember what he read about the metal, "Its Daigotsu-sama's show but I at the very least can tell you it is highly toxic, and under standard conditions phases between a vapor and a liquid with far too much ease. Its also exceptionally light, being quite a low density fluid. And it possesses the standard properties of Obsidian. Including the Madness, thus its containment. I will not remove it from such without expressed orders to do so."
He starts chewing again, a little faster at this point. Its clear to all the mans not a courtier and that he is clearly worried about something. Whether its his Superior in this case, the Spider that rule above them both, or the fluid he has contained is hard to say.
"Now then, any further concerns?" His tone spoke of offense, as he considered at what point the subtle slights made against him, his family and his school and their long history of working with both magic and physics was considered a duel worthy offense.
The Koshuud may think themselves better star ship makers, but the Gyushi were making swords and seeking to understand both the physical and spiritual properties of chemicals when the Koshuud were still looking after ponies.

(OOC: I was looking for ports on the device, not the room. The goal was to see if I can plug something into it and try and get location data or transmission records to use as a clue to finding our lost space station)

"A few more, yeah," Tai-Wen says, glancing back to the Gyushi, naturally oblivious to any offense she has given. "Namely, what is the substance's purpose? My first thought of course is as a weapon, but does it have other uses? Will it carry a charge, does it burn as fuel, do those standard properties of Obsidian include being the bane of unnatural creatures? Also, was it intentionally created for use on the station, or are we looking at some kind of runoff, a byproduct that we might be able to use to track progress?"
She glances over to the satellite. "We can get to ripping that apart once we deal with the potentially lethal Hellephant in the room I think."

The Tortoise was sure that the Spider Engineer was quite good at Rokugani tech and probably knew more about the hard sciences behind it than she did. However, this was probably not Rokugani tech nor did it necessarily adhere to the traditional Rokugani understanding of the universe. She pulled out the bulky grey Ichicom MK IV and set it at a workstation. It whirred loudly to life, making more noise than the usual datapad as it booted. She makes a few notes about his initial observations. Tension screws, non-rokugani configuration. That done, she approaches the satellite. "<Hiss... Were you built to lie in wait and watch?>" She quietly speaks to it in the raspy tongue of the Sassathif, examining its surfaces for makers marks or the screws that the Gyushi spoke about. Taking a quick look at the device. Investigation/Perception(Notice), One Raise. 7k3e: 7d10r1o10k3 22Having missed the rest of the speech about the obsidianite, she turns her attention back to the room as the Unicorn speaks of ripping things apart. That could work to her advantage, but the strange liquid/gas had no mystique for her right now.

"I'm sorry, I think I might have misheard you", Kokishin says as he hands the device to the kasuga for her own inspection. "Could you repeat that?"
