Literally? Sure. That being said, he typically maintains rather pointy fingernails, so the riposte might be uncomfortable

I poked him and thankfully didn't get poked back~ I believe the rulings are that Matsu aren't about ranged weaponry, so no, they stick as written; and that the Shinjo bushi technique TWA mentioned does indeed work as you've described

Emeralddragon said Matsumoto's bushi school did apply to starship combat though. Page 4 of this thread.a

On that topic, is it possible that Shugenja buffs/debuffs affect ships?

Ok, first to my Hida friend. Thank You for the correction, subforums may appear shortly now that I have free time and am not cat sitting. Question about weapons and simple attacks: So, most, if not all of us, are getting a daisho or a wakizachi. Do we get the accompanying firearms, or can we exchange them if we want (wakizachi->sidearm, katana->rifle)? The Daisho is still the symbol if the Samurai caste at its heart, thus why its the most common weapon in the Empire still. While the Shugenja and Courtier schools don't carry their Katana, my assumption has always been that they still have them, just at home, peace bound and never carried, as a symbol of their duties and role in society. (As we saw with the Tokugawa Shogunate era Courtiers who still had Katana, even if some went their entire lives never drawing it.) The idea of exchanging such a weapon for a gun would be akin to what the Tsuruchi did when they snapped their swords. Every Bushi school that I have searched in the core also gets a "Any One Weapon" or equivalent. So I don't feel the need to make an exchange. HOWEVER I also recognize that you have people like the Moto Bushi School who get 10 Koku, and a Horse, and a Heavy Weapon or a Polearm, AND a Daisho and Any One Weapon...so starting gear is not balanced around some sort of budget. And given the setting a case could be made for an additional weapon being given in some cases (just like in Winter Court, having more then the standard 1 Kimono was expected) So after my thought process is clear to you all, here is the ruling. As a Bushi you will not trade your Katana in without GM permission requiring backstory reasons as to why you are not carrying it with you, as thats the symbol of being a Samurai and required to answer a challenged to a duel. Under most situations the any 1 weapons will covering your gun needs. However if you can give me a valid reason why your clan has trusted you with another weapon, OR If you have given me a backstory reason why you are not carrying a Katana if the two stories are connected OR choose to pay 5 Koku I will allow you to take either a pistol, or 10 koku for a standard rifle.Question about weapons and simple attacks: Secondary question, though I don't know who is impacted by this, just something I wondered about. Most bushi schools get simple attacks with samurai weapons, but some, e.g. Matsu Berserker, opened that up to all melee attacks. This used to be an upgrade, but now it's a clear downgrade. Can we assume 'all melee attacks as simple actions' to include 'as well as attacks with weapons with the samurai keyword' as these include non-melee options in this setting? Ok, there seems to be some confusion here, so lets clear that up. Specifically the situation on page 4 was referring to the the part of the Matsu school that just says "You add your honor to your damage rolls." Their Rank 1 technique. Basically they were asking does "All damage" still mean "All damage" given these new weapon types, and such. Which I answered Yes to. The question in Tamiyo's case refers to the Matsu rank 3 technique and the answer is unfortunately going to be a little vague. Depends on the school. The phrasing of the Matsu technique is connected to the nature of the character. Matsu Beserkers can use any melee weapon cause they are focused on being in the thick of combat. As such Matsu beserkers are never going to choose a rifle, unless the Akodo shove it down their throats. And even then they will be charging the front lines with their Melee weapons, screaming bloody murder as soon as they can. Thats the nature of the berserker. Compare this to the Daidoji Iron warriors. They are the army of the Crane Clan, they make up the rank and file of their First and Second Armies, and their technique referring to any Melee weapon is about the schools willingness to adapt and versatility in the face of a hostile foe. No one would question the Daidoji Iron Warriors wielding Guns, and in fact in this age when the Gun is the second most common weapon (after the Katana) it is clear that the Daidoji Iron Warriors would have people armed with rifles. I also feel the need to point out that Melee weapons are not a downgrade over ranged weapons. The damage scalings are about equal, (Assuming you are using Radient Ammo, or firing Explosive ammo at a target in radient armor, you will deal damage similar to a Katana or even less with a Pistol. The Rifle does more but still hits less hard then the Tetsubo ) the guns get a negative penalty to attack roles if you are in melee or if you shoot at someone who is in melee with someone else, AND you can neither do a Knockdown nor a Feint Maneuver with a gun, unless you are bashing them with the weapon in melee range. While certain dishonorable weapons are now redundant, as are bows, the vast majority of weapons, from the Tetsubo to the Katana still function as close equals to guns. This was an intentional decision on my behalf because: ('Rule of Cool' and 'Katanas Are Just Better' tropes also apply strongly here.) By the same ticket, does the Shinjo Bushi school, which gets Simple Attacks with a bow while Mounted, get Simple Attacks with the Artillery skill while Piloting? Yes. Some things are just flat cross overs.

('Rule of Cool' and 'Katanas Are Just Better' tropes also apply strongly here.). Shinwa approves this message. And also will be melee-ing the heck out of anything not separated from him by the void of deep space, so be aware.

So, FTL travel. Is the Rokugani method one of instantaneous teleportation from point A to point B via summoned portals, or is it more a Star Wars Hyperspace kinda thing?

As someone who likes downtime to a degree for characters to interact with each other, its a bit of both.
Over short distances, (what I am going to call within the sector or the next sector over) its basically instantaneous.
This is what allows nasty Ambushes and the like still to function.
Over long distance, you tend to get a travel time, but never more then half a day at current Empire Size. (This limit is also in place to make sure I don't get players stuck in limbo for to long since a day is so long IRL)
You personally, having left the Empire, would know that the Tortoise have currently 'explored' a week (The Tortoise still have EXTREMELY large holes in this picture once you go beyond 2 days travel, thus how the Jigoku Aliens slipped through. Space after all is big AND mostly empty) in all directions EXCEPT towards the Core. The Core has its own set of problems and it was going to be much easier to use the Mantis and Unicorn to solve them then take the technology and rely on Sakoku to give you free rein.
Obviously that won't work now, but it was a good plan at the time given your clan's lack of Shugenja.

General estimate is fine.
How fast would you say my motorcycle can go?
Top speed?
And 0 to 60 mph?

Depends on which gravity well you're in. Movement rules for differential gravity...there's a fun chart.

Clearly since the Hida have magnetic boarding armor, you need a mag-tired motorcycle. Road war on the surface of a Katana class ship in the middle of a firefight.

Well, surely Nanashi's theme is that Steppenwolf song from Easy Rider.
What's the name of that one?
